Waiting, waiting, waiting
We know that the waiting is torture, but with Johnson Finalist letters being mailed today and regular decision letters being mailed next Friday, we want to make sure there are no mistakes before the letters go out the door. So, how about a little something to do to pass the time while we dot our I’s and cross our T’s?
During some of the group interviews for the Johnson Scholarship Competition, Johnson Finalists were asked to write either haikus or limericks that captured the essence of W & L. Listed below are the fruits of their labors for your reading pleasure. Leave a comment to let us know your favorite, and the authors will receive a little prize in the mail. The voting will remain open through the end of the day on Monday, March 21.
Enjoy! (and keep in mind that they had no more than 7 minutes to pen their poems)
Haiku A
Steeped in tradition
Brotherhood and scenery
Where honor abounds
Haiku B
Voice of Lee and George
Our yawp to the world beyond
Bird flying in rain
Haiku C
Triple the kindness
New and old merged together
Double you and el
Haiku D
Students are enthused
Engaged learning forms our path
Tradition inspires
Haiku E
Red brick and columns
Kindness and honor mark the peace
Lee guards the green grass
Limerick A
We flew, we drove – we came to town,
The students here wouldn’t let us frown
Although we came from near and far,
That didn’t change who we really are,
Scholars to Generals, we’ve earned our crown.
Limerick B
As I look around what do I see?
The campus of Washington and Lee
All white pillars and trees
Students aiming to please
Washington and Lee makes me happy.
Limerick C
There was a young general named Washington
Who started a school to teach young ‘uns
He met up with Lee
Upon one thing they couldn’t agree
Under whose name the school would be run
Limerick D
The honor code of Washington & Lee
Is something special as you can see.
I can leave my stuff lying around
I come back and it’s all safe and sound
A General is an awesome thing to be.
Limerick E
We came from all over the nation
A free trip despite inflation
Though we slept on the floor
We will come back for more
We will get a GREAT education!
Limerick F
Across the colonnade we run
To get ice cream in Lexington
With homemade Sweet Things
As Lee Chapel rings
If only we could see the sun**
**We still <3 Washington and Lee (even in spite of the rain and cold)
Limerick G
Wandering through the rain
Wasn’t such a pain
For good Ol’ Washington and Lee
Felt like home to me
Admission we hope to attain
Limerick H
I once knew a man named Lee
He fought for the South’s liberty
Although he was not victorious
He influenced a school that was glorious
And forever on the campus he will be
Limerick I
W&L is a traditional school
The greek system is amazingly cool
In such a small town
The school wears the crown
The students and professors are friendly, hardworking and passionate – definitely not a fool!
And I will start the voting!
My favorite haiku is Haiku B. I love the word “yawp” – and I will admit that I didn’t know it before the interview. I loved the Walt Whitman connection being made across the room while they were frantically penning the poem.
My favorite limerick is Limerick E. Simple but with a clear message.
I get the second vote I guess.
I really like haiku A and Limerik C, but great job to all.
Thank God! Somnoee with brains speaks!
Haiku B
Limerick C
I loved them all, but I’ll vote for Haiku A due to its smooth flow and Limerick C for its originality!
Hi Everyone!
These are my votes:
Haiku E
Limerick A – Here, I really like how the colloquialism in the diction contrasts with the dignity of the message. Whoever wrote this in less than 10 minutes did a great job!
Haiku B and Limerick E…
Those are my favorites, but they are all impressive!
Limerick C is fantastic
My favorites were Haiku A and Limerick C
I like Haiku A. Very descriptive !
Haiku E and Limerick C!
